Ensuring the safety of communities downstream of Paradise Dam is Sunwater’s primary concern. Immediate essential works are necessary to lower the spillway in order to better manage community safety.

Water release event: February–June 2020
Between 13 February and 8 June 2020, Sunwater released water from Paradise Dam to bring the storage level back down to 42 per cent to facilitate essential work to lower the spillway by 5.8 metres. The works to lower the spillway will provide short-term risk reduction while a longer-term remediation of the dam is designed and implemented.
The water released from the dam over this period was made available at no charge.

Water release event: September–December 2019
Between 27 September and 3 December 2019, Sunwater lowered Paradise Dam’s water storage level to 42 per cent ahead of the 2019/20 wet season to facilitate essential work to lower the spillway to reduce the risk of a dam failure.
The water released from the dam over the 10-week period was made available at no charge.
