Geotechnical investigations update

Sunwater has recently completed geotechnical works at Burdekin Falls Dam to investigate the soil and rock properties of the land surrounding the dam.

The works are part of the detailed business case for the Burdekin Falls Dam Raising and Dam Improvement projects. The investigations are critical to inform the engineering design and will also help to make recommendations regarding the most effective type of machinery and tools required during construction.

The investigations involved:

• a drilling program of cored holes to assess the foundation conditions below the dam
• an assessment condition of the saddle dams’ foundations for potential embankment raising
• a mapping and sampling program to review the available options for construction material.

The team covered several known sites assessed during the original dam construction along with new sites. Information collected is now being assessed by geotechnical specialists and engineers.
