Two popular recreation hubs in the Burnett region have been revamped as part of a $24.5 million initiative to improve facilities at Sunwater storages across regional Queensland.
The Queensland Government program is enhancing visitor amenities and infrastructure at 17 sites, from St George in the state’s south-west to Mareeba in the far north.
The upgrades are delivering new or improved lookouts, day-use areas, toilet facilities, boat ramps, playgrounds, barbecues, picnic shelters and access roads.
Sunwater has completed upgrades to the day use recreation area near the boat ramp at Bjelke Petersen Dam near Murgon.
The work involved the installation of an accessible BBQ and shelter, electrical upgrades and additional lighting, accessible paths and new safety bollards.
This is the second stage of upgrades to the dam, following the refurbishment of the picnic shelters and BBQs in June 2025.
Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington said the dam is a popular recreation spot for locals and visitors, and the improvements will support long-term economic and community benefits across the region.
“We’re investing in infrastructure upgrades to make our dams safer, more accessible and more enjoyable for all Queenslanders,” Ms Frecklington said.
“These improvements will support local tourism, encouraging more visitors to the region, and ensure our community can enjoy these fantastic amenities for years to come.”
Sunwater has also completed work at Wuruma Dam near Eidsvold to improve access and install new facilities near the boat ramp area.
The work included road upgrades and additional carparks, new picnic facilities and a toilet block and complements the construction of new facilities at the campground area that were completed in January.
Member for Callide Bryson Head said the improvements would enhance one of the Burnett region’s favourite outdoor destinations.
“Wuruma Dam is a much-loved spot for boating, fishing and camping, and these upgrades will make it an even better experience for locals and visitors,” Mr Head said.
“These improvements are part of the Crisafulli Government’s commitment to investing in the facilities and infrastructure that help regional communities thrive.”
Sunwater Executive General Manager Operations Colin Bendall thanked the community for their support and understanding while work was being delivered.
“While Sunwater’s core business is to store and supply water to keep our regions moving, our dams are important recreation hubs for our local communities,” Mr Bendall said.
“These upgrades ensure we provide great spaces for our communities to enjoy, while we continue to provide critical water security for our irrigation, industry and urban customers.”
