Building RPA capability from the inside

New graduates of Sunwater's bespoke remotely piloted aircraft course.

Sunwater has developed a bespoke Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) training course – purpose‑built for how Sunwater uses RPAs in real operational environments. And the best part? It’s been created in‑house by talented Operations Technology duo, Nick and Ben.

Instead of relying on generic external training, Nick and Ben have built a program that reflects the realities of our work: inspections over water, survey tasks and safe operations on active sites. As Ben puts it, “It’s more than just flying an RPA – it’s about understanding what RPA operations mean in a Sunwater context.”

Why build the course in-house?

  • Stronger internal capability
  • Consistent, high‑quality training across our five regions
  • Clear visibility of staff competency
  • Sunwater procedures and safety ethos embedded from day one

The course runs over a full day – half theory, half practical – delivered face‑to‑face by the Sunwater RPA team. Practical training happens on real Sunwater sites and assets, often tied directly to operational work. Participants don’t just learn the rules; they apply them immediately, building confidence and capability from day one.

By taking training to the regions, we’re making it:

  • More flexible
  • More practical
  • More cost‑effective

A fantastic initiative and huge credit to the Operational Technology and Learning Management System teams for making it happen.
