Lower Burdekin irrigators will benefit from a more resilient and reliable water delivery network following the
completion of an upgrade to Sunwater’s Elliot Pump Station.
The facility, located on the Burdekin River about 10 kilometres south of Clare, plays a critical role in providing
water for irrigation customers in the region.
The work included installation of a new electrical switch room, replacement cabling, and improved control
and monitoring systems.
In addition to enhancing operational performance and efficiency, the project significantly improves worker
safety with new mitigation measures in place to reduce electrical hazards.
Sunwater Burdekin Whitsundays Operations Manager Aaron Elphinstone said the project will support the safe
and efficient operation of the pump station for decades to come.
“This significant upgrade to an important water infrastructure asset reinforces Sunwater’s commitment to
long-term reliability,” he said.
“The original pumps have been in operation since the late 1980’s, providing a reliable water supply for the
past four decades before reaching end of life.
“Water supply is essential for our customers and communities, and it is critical the Elliot Pump Station is
equipped to meet the requirements of Burdekin irrigators.”
Sunwater partnered with Townsville-based contractor Minelec and subcontractor CivilPlus Constructions, to
replace ageing equipment and systems to deliver a modern pumping station designed to meet both current
and future operational needs.
Additionally, Powerhouse Switchrooms were responsible for the new building, while Crisp Power and Control
fabricated the switchboards, and Woodfield Engineering erected the structural steel.
“With the capability to support a long design life, the upgrade provides a safe and resilient asset that will
continue to deliver reliable water for customers,” Mr Elphinstone said.
“While the project benefits our irrigators, it also supported the local economy with jobs for contractors and
suppliers from the region who were involved in the design and delivery of the upgrades.
“Importantly, the work was completed while keeping the existing infrastructure operational, ensuring minimal
disruption to the water supply.”
