Dam Emergency Sirens | Audible ‘Live’ Testing
Sunwater will conduct audible ‘live’ testing of its dam emergency sirens during October 2026. The sirens are located in the communities of Biloela, North Eton, Pinnacle, Emerald, Inglewood and Coringa. Each siren test will last up to three minutes. The siren will sound and a voice will announce ‘THIS IS ONLY A TEST’.
Dates, times and locations of the tests are as follows:
Callide Dam | Tuesday 6 October 2026
The sirens at Linkes Road and adjacent to the water tower on Earlsfield Street will be tested between 10:00am and 12:00pm

The siren at the North Eton Community Park Kinchant Road, North Eton will be tested between 9:00am and 12:00pm

The sirens at Rundle Park, Opal Street and the East Nogoa Water Treatment Plant on Rivergum Drive will be tested between 10:00am and 12:00pm

The siren at Rabbits Hill, adjacent to Potters Road, Inglewood will be tested between 10:00am and 11:00am.

The siren at Paradise Dam and the siren located approximately 7.5km downstream of Paradise Dam at Coringa will be tested between 10:00am and 12:00pm.

Why do we have sirens?
Sunwater’s dam emergency sirens are one of several ways we help keep communities informed during an emergency.
The sirens would only be activated in the very unlikely event of a dam failure, helping provide an urgent warning to people living downstream.
It’s important to note that the sirens are not used for routine dam operations, water releases or flood events.
Why are you testing the sirens?
Sunwater runs regular silent testing and monitoring of the dam emergency siren system.
Audible or ‘live’ testing is the most effective way for Sunwater to ensure the sirens are working and can be operated properly in an emergency.
Audible testing also reminds people what the sirens sound like and helps raise awareness of the importance of emergency preparedness.
What do I need to do?
No action is required from community members during the testing.
Sunwater team members will be onsite to monitor the test and confirm the sirens are operating as expected.
Residents are encouraged to secure pets that may be sensitive to loud noises and let family, friends and neighbours know that testing is taking place.
Will I hear the sirens?
Sound can travel differently depending on weather conditions, the surrounding landscape and other background noise at the time. As a result, some people may not hear the siren during testing.
It’s important to remember that the siren is just one of several methods used to alert communities in the unlikely event of a dam emergency.
