The Peter Faust Dam will be open to the public on Saturday 15 June for residents, families and visitors to enjoy a fun, free and educational day out.
Dam wall walking tours, information displays and community service demonstrations are all on offer as well as plenty of fun activities for the kids.
Dam operator Sunwater, together with Whitsunday Regional Council and supported by local community groups, welcome visitors to enjoy the beautiful surrounds of Lake Proserpine, learn about how the dam works and delve into its history.
Sunwater General Manager Operations North, Travis Richards said Peter Faust Dam, also known as Lake Proserpine and located on the Proserpine River, was one of the area’s most iconic assets and a great spot to visit.
Highlights for visitors include free guided tours of the dam and a flood boat rescue demonstration by the local State Emergency Service. Biosecurity Queensland and Maritime Safety Queensland will also be on hand to provide valuable information on weed management, fishing and water safety.
Sunwater staff and Whitsunday Regional Council will also share information on easy steps that people can take to plan, prepare and keep their family safe during extreme weather events.
Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Andrew Willcox said Peter Faust Dam Open Day provides an opportunity for Council to showcase the Lake Proserpine Recreational Master Plan.
“The Master Plan was adopted by Council in 2017 and we are now moving forward with Stage 1 to help maximise future recreational and tourism opportunities.”
Peter Faust Dam, which is owned and managed by Sunwater, was built between 1986 and 1990, and is part of the Proserpine River Water Supply Scheme. The scheme supplies sugar-growing areas of Proserpine and provides urban water supply for the Whitsundays and Bowen, and Pioneer shires for the towns of Bowen, Proserpine, Airlie Beach and Midge Point as well as irrigation for sugar cane and milling.
The dam was named after the then mayor of Proserpine Shire, Peter Faust, who was a strong advocate for the development of the dam and transformation of the region.
The dam open day will run from 10am to 2pm at the main lakeside picnic area, off Station Road, Lake Proserpine.
The entire family will be able enjoy plenty of fun activities including jumping castle, sausage sizzle (provided by Proserpine Lions Club), fish and chips, cold drinks and a coffee van.
Travis said open days were a part of Sunwater’s community program to ensure local residents have the opportunity to enjoy their local water resources, and supported the Queensland Government’s initiative ‘Get Ready Queensland’, to build awareness and understanding of the how to deal with natural disasters.
