Free camping continues at Wuruma Dam

Sunwater understands the importance of local recreation and tourism in the North Burnett region and would like to assure the community that we are not closing, or planning to prohibit camping at Wuruma Dam.

As the health and safety of dam visitors and our local Sunwater employees is of paramount importance, the designated free camping site at Wuruma Dam will however be relocated to a new area near the dam wall and spillway.

The new site provides 40 designated, equally sized, clearly marked camping spaces on flat terrain away from vegetation (trees) and the dam’s foreshore, at no cost to campers.

The new site will open on Monday 11 March 2019, and there will be a three-week grace period while camping at the foreshore near the boat ramp is phased out.

While the new free designated camping site is being established and until Monday 1 April 2019, visitors can continue to camp at the existing bush camping area near the boat ramp.

Sunwater acknowledges that the relocation of the designated camping site may require some adjustment for regular campers, and we will aim to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible.  

Sunwater would like to reassure the community that recreational day use of the foreshore and boat ramp will continue to be permitted, with the relocation of the camping site providing more space for everyone to enjoy themselves, especially during peak periods.

Camping and recreational facilities at Wuruma Dam are provided in goodwill to the community, and Sunwater is working hard to manage and operate the site in balance with our core business objectives, while ensuring cost impacts on our irrigation, industry and urban customers are minimised.

Sunwater has been working with North Burnett Regional Council regarding these changes, and is open to further discussions about how we can assist them, should they wish to improve recreational facilities at the dam.
