Fred Haigh Dam flood repair work continues

Fred Haigh

Sunwater has begun the next stage of planned work at Fred Haigh Dam to repair scour damage from previous floods downstream of the spillway.

These work builds upon the initial dam works completed in 2019 to restore the functionality of the downstream spillway channel and reduce the impact that future flood events may have on the dam structure.

The scouring, which resulted from the energy impact of flood water on the natural spillway channel, has been subject to ongoing surveillance and monitoring.

While there is no immediate dam safety risk, works are necessary to advance the reinstatement of the downstream spillway to its pre-flood condition and ensure the asset remains safe and functional for years to come.

The current stage of works involves:

  • installing a mass concrete slab across a section of the spillway channel, immediately downstream of the spillway chute (including covering the scour areas filled in 2019 with reinforced concrete)
  • installing 8.3 metre-long anchors immediately downstream of the spillway to provide reinforcement for the concrete slab that will be poured.

The works will not impact public access to recreational facilities such as boat ramps, picnic areas or customer water allocations. Sunwater will work with the contractor to minimise construction impacts on the community.
