Water Safety Campaign — Targets the Big Kids

SunWater has rolled out a state-wide advertising campaign to educate the public about water safety around our lakes, dams and weirs.

SunWater Water Safety Campaign - Billboard Ad

Since 2004 the SunWater ‘Blue’ water safety campaign has been visiting schools and community events, informing and educating primary school-aged children of the dangers of swimming in dams, weirs and channels.

However, a review of the 2006 SunWater public safety incident report revealed that it was not just children running into trouble in and around our infrastructure.

SunWater’s water safety campaign has therefore been expanded to target the adults and families visiting our dams, lakes and weirs during the Christmas and Easter holiday period.

The most common types of accidents that have been occurring in and around SunWater infrastructure have involved:

  • Alcohol consumption,
  • slips or falls,
  • water sports (eg. water skiing & jet skiing)
  • swimming near hazards or in irrigation channels,
  • boating activities,
  • fishing after dusk.

The new water safety campaign aims to reduce these incidents by educating families and adult males about water safety via regional TV, radio and press.

Please help support this campaign by spreading the message through your local area about how important it is to take care on and around our dams, lakes and weirs.

Tune In

The ad uses a typical family holiday photo to which it was felt everybody will relate. The messages accompanying all campaign material are ‘take care to make it the fun it should be’ and ‘nothing kills the fun like an accident’.

To re-enforce our key message billboard signs will be erected at strategic dam, weir, channel and camping locations around the state, while a fishing version of the ad will appear in Qld Fishing Monthly and North Queensland Fish and Boat.
