Pipe dream is now reality

A fleet of road trains rumbled into Cloncurry on Friday to deliver the 38km drought-proofing water pipeline that will secure the region’s future growth.

Over the coming weeks a convoy of trucks will unload 4800 pipes which will be laid along the route of the pipeline in readiness for construction to commence in July.

The pipeline will interconnect with SunWater’s existing North Western Queensland Pipeline and deliver up to 1500 megalitres of water.

Cloncurry Mayor Andrew Daniels and SunWater’s Cloncurry Pipeline Project Manager John Kelly were on hand to inspect the first truckload arriving in from Townsville.

Mayor Daniels said it was an exciting day for Cloncurry.

“This pipeline is about providing a reliable water supply for Cloncurry and enabling its future industrial and population growth,” Cr Daniels said.

“We have wished for a secure water future for some time and today it’s become a reality and I am looking forward to its progress over the coming months.”

Mr Kelly said the 450mm diameter pipes’ arrival heralded an important milestone in this significant project.

“The Cloncurry Pipeline is an important piece of water infrastructure for this previously drought-stricken region,” Mr Kelly said.

“SunWater will continue to liaise with all stakeholders to bring this project to fruition and we expect to be delivering a secure water supply to town by March next year,” he said.

Mr Kelly said SunWater was committed to delivering a high quality project for the people of Cloncurry, as inexpensively as possible.

“SunWater, and the successful project tenders will endeavour to use local services where possible and viable and discussions with local contractors is already taking place,” he said.
