Tenders Announced For Cloncurry Pipeline Project

A $42.5 million pipedream to drought-proof Cloncurry will become a reality with SunWater announcing today the first shipment of water pipes will arrive this week.

The first shipment of the 4800 pipes will arrive at Townsville Port tomorrow (Tuesday) and a fleet of B-doubles will commence delivering them to site.    

SunWater CEO Peter Boettcher said Australian-owned Iplex Pipelines was the key supplier of ductile iron pipes for a 28 km section of the pipeline, which will eventually transport water a total of 38 km from SunWater’s North Western Queensland Water Pipeline to the town of Cloncurry.

Mr Boettcher also advised that Queensland-based company Moody Civil and Pipe Pty Ltd had been awarded the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) process for the project’s construction.

“The ECI process is only the preliminary contract awarded to discuss the constructability of the project and not the actual construction tender, which is yet to be awarded,” Mr Boettcher said.

“However, I’m pleased to say this project is rapidly taking shape and look forward to final pipe supply and construction tenders being awarded in the near future.

“The Cloncurry Pipeline will deliver up to 1500 megalitres of water to the town and will cater for future population and industrial growth,” he said.

Mr Boettcher said construction was expected to start in July and commencement of water supply was anticipated to be in March 2010.
