Ayr High School students ready to carve out engineering career with SunWater

Working on some of Queensland’s most important water infrastructure projects will be just one of the many engineering experiences in the pipeline for three Ayr High School graduates who have been inducted into SunWater’s Cadetship Program.

Ashley Hiscox, Matthew Farmer and Cameron Kirke were among only seven Queensland students successfully selected to take part in the program, which is designed to offer on-the-job experience alongside formal engineering education.

Over the next four years the new recruits will be mentored by experienced engineers and be a part of development teams working on key water projects that will underpin the growth of Queensland.

SunWater Regional Manager Gary Everson said he was pleased Ayr had figured so highly in the intake.

“It’s great to see so many of our local high school students have been selected to take part in this program and I am confident they are now on the path of a very rewarding engineering career,” Mr Everson said.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our cadets to learn and earn while completing their SunWater-funded tertiary education and it’s all part of our ongoing commitment to regional communities,” he said.

Mr Everson said the program’s new recruits would be located throughout regional Queensland during their cadetship so they could experience different elements of the engineering profession.

Cameron Kirke, who was recently posted in Bundaberg, said he was already working on a wide variety of projects under the guidance of engineering professionals.

“I’m working within a team investigating the development of water infrastructure for farms, towns and industry and this experience will provide an excellent platform for my ongoing Associate Engineering Degree studies,” Cameron said.

“It’s a great program to be a part of and probably even more so due to the fact I am one of three Ayr High School graduates to be selected. We’ve all formed a good sense of camaraderie since being inducted and we are all looking forward to developing our careers with SunWater through the program,” he said.
