SunWater Welcomes Independent Assessment into Kinchant Dam Operations and Community Warning Systems


The SunWater board of directors and management has today welcomed the State Government’s announcement and appointment of the Queensland Chief Scientist, Professor Suzanne Miller to undertake an independent assessment into the operation of Kinchant Dam and community warning systems.

SunWater CEO Nicole Hollows said that SunWater is committed to public safety and building community resilience and will fully participate in all aspects of the independent assessment.

“We understand this is a distressing and emotional time for many people and our thoughts are with the local community as they face the challenging weeks ahead and deal with the impacts of Cyclone Debbie.” Ms Hollows said.

“We believe the actions we have taken in the lead up to and during Cyclone Debbie have been appropriate and we look forward to any learnings from this independent assessment.”

“It is important that the community is aware of the potential sources of flooding in their catchments and that they are warned as early as possible if there is a risk of flooding. SunWater will work with the Mackay Regional Council and disaster management agencies on the systems and processes for early warning communications and better understanding of the Sandy Creek Catchment and Kinchant Dam.” she said.

Ms Hollows added that SunWater looks forward to reviewing the findings and recommendations of the independent assessment and working with Mackay Regional Council to meet the needs of customers and the wider community.

Kinchant Dam is situated on one branch of Sandy Creek and is operated as an off stream storage supplying water to irrigation customers who make a significant economic contribution to the region.

The immediate catchment feeding Kinchant Dam is around 31 km 2. The entire Sandy Creek Catchment area which flows to Eton is approximately 210 km 2. Kinchant Dam is a relatively small dam with a maximum capacity of 62,800 ML, in comparison to other SunWater dams in the Mackay region such as Teemburra Dam 147,556 ML and Eungella Dam 112,476 ML.
