St George irrigators accept offer to manage local irrigation channels

SunWater has offered its full support to irrigator owned company Mallawa Irrigation Ltd as irrigators this month have accepted the offer to own and operate irrigation channels in the St George Water Supply Scheme (WSS).

The offer received more than 97% support from St George irrigators for 112 kilometres of irrigation channels and pipelines between the Balonne River and Buckinbah pump station to be transferred to and managed by the irrigator-owned company.

Chief Executive Officer Nicole Hollows said SunWater remains committed to its customers and the local management process and will assist the Board of Mallawa Irrigation Ltd to facilitate a successful transition.

“We are focused on continuing the effective operations of the St George scheme and ensuring its long-term sustainability for staff, customers and the community alike,” Ms Hollows said.

The agreement excludes SunWater’s bulk water assets, such as Beardmore Dam and Jack Taylor Weir, which will be continue to be owned and managed by SunWater.

Subject to the completion of the transfer process, the scheme which distributes water to around 50 customers, irrigating 10,000 hectares of land, will transfer from SunWater to Mallawa Irrigation Ltd from 1 July 2018.

SunWater will continue to manage customer water deliveries; orders and billing until Mallawa Irrigation take over these activites. For more on Local Management Arrangements (LMA) for SunWater’s irrigation channels visit
