Free community event to prepare for storm season

Tablelands residents are invited to a day of family entertainment and activities while learning how to keep safe this storm season at the Tinaroo Falls Dam Open Day on Saturday 21 October.

A joint initiative of the Tablelands Regional Council, Mareeba Shire Council and SunWater, the all-hazards information day supports the State Government’s ‘Get Ready Queensland’ campaign to help families prepare for extreme weather this summer.

The event will be held between 10am and 2pm and feature walking tours of the dam wall, informative displays and fun activities to illustrate how important and easy it is to be prepared.

Best of all, local families will be able to have some outdoor fun, with free live music, face painting, balloon twisting, a jumping castle and slide and free fairy floss for the kids.

SunWater General Manager Operations North, Travis Richards said the open day was a chance for locals to enjoy a fun day out with the family, while learning how to prepare for the coming storm and cyclone season.

"Extreme weather is part of our lives as Queenslanders and the aim of this event is to encourage locals to better understand their flood risk and the easy steps they can take to plan, prepare and keep their family safe.

"It is a great opportunity to learn more about SunWater’s dam outflow notifications and how they integrate with the region’s disaster management plans – and also a rare chance to see the dam wall close‐up on a guided walking tour," Mr Richards said.

Tablelands Regional Council Mayor, Cr Joe Paronella said their annual ‘Get Ready’ event was critical to ensuring local families were prepared for summer disasters like cyclones and floods.

"Our disaster management team takes their role very seriously and preparation is key to effectively coordinating the community’s response to any natural disaster that may come our way", Cr Paronella said.

There are lots of great activities for the entire family and the Tinaroo Rural Fire Brigade will be putting on a free BBQ, which is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

Mayor of Mareeba Shire Council, Cr Tom Gilmore, said strengthening the community spirit which characterised Tablelands’ many communities was an important aspect of the event.

"I’d encourage families to come along and enjoy the BBQ or even bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the magnificent part of the world in which we live," Cr Gilmore said.

Parks and Wildlife Service Rangers will be on hand to talk about the importance of looking after the area’s important flora and fauna.

As Lake Tinaroo is extremely popular for water sports, Maritime Safety Queensland will be there to provide great tips on how everyone can enjoy themselves safely.

SunWater customers are encouraged to come and discuss billing or account enquiries with the customer support team.

The Tinaroo Falls Dam Open Day will be held at the Tinaroo Falls Dam lookout (near the dam wall) from 10am to 2pm.

Note: The Tinaroo Falls Dam Open Day will be held weather permitting. Cancellations or changes to the program will be communicated as soon as possible via SunWater’s Facebook page:
