Community safety the focus of Kinchant Dam information day04-Oct-2017
A community information day is being held at Kinchant Dam next Saturday 7 October to give locals the chance to see Kinchant Dam operations first-hand and get information on how to prepare for the summer wet season.
Attendees will have a rare opportunity to view a water release demonstration, showing the maximum volume that can be released through the outlet pipes from the dam into Sandy Creek.
SunWater CEO Nicole Hollows said representatives from SunWater, Mackay Regional Council and the State Emergency Service will be attending to provide practical advice on how to prepare for extreme weather.
“There will be information on how to prepare your family for this storm season, which will be at the forefront of people’s minds after the flooding caused by Tropical Cyclone Debbie earlier this year,” Ms Hollows said.
Ms Hollows says a major learning from the independent Chief Scientist report into Cyclone Debbie was that SunWater needs to provide more opportunities for people to understand dam operations and to what extent the dam contributes to catchment flooding during extreme weather events.
“The impacts of Cyclone Debbie and the extreme rainfall that followed have had a heartbreaking impact on this community,” Ms Hollows said.
“It was really important for us to open up the dam to the community and welcome questions about our management of the dam. We want people to see first-hand how our dam works and make informed decisions in the future.
“It is also a great opportunity for the community to learn more about SunWater’s dam outflow notifications and how they integrate with the region’s disaster management plans,” she said.
There will be a range of activities to keep the family entertained throughout the event and a charity sausage sizzle by the Mirani-Sugar Valley Lions Club.
SunWater customers are also encouraged to come and discuss billing or account enquiries with the customer support team.
The Kinchant Dam Community Information Day will be held at the dam recreation area on Saturday 7 October from 10 am to 2 pm.
