A trip down memory lane for locals at Tinaroo Open Day

Around 180 locals made their way to Tinaroo Falls Dam last Saturday 21 October for an information day hosted by regional water company SunWater and Tablelands Regional Council.

The relaxed event was an opportunity for the locals to learn more about just how important and easy it is to prepare for the summer storm season.

People of all ages enjoyed the community event with the Tinaroo Falls Dam walking tours bringing back fond memories for many who had grown up swimming and playing around Lake Tinaroo.

SunWater Service Manager Charlie Martens said the open day was an opportunity for the community to share memories of Tinaroo Falls Dam with their children and talk about how the dam works and keeping safe around the dam infrastructure.

“The open day was about creating awareness about how the Tinaroo Falls Dam works and what better place to do that than on the dam wall,” Mr Martens said.

“Something many people may not realise is that the dam is not designed to mitigate flood water and that it won’t prevent a flood. It’s important for us to share this knowledge with the community so that they understand the role the dam plays in the broader catchment.”

The Tinaroo Rural Fire Brigade were a big part of the event; educating through a model fire demonstration and information display and putting on a BBQ that was so popular they went through around 140 patties and 50 sausages.

The Rural Fire Brigade mascot ‘Bushy’ the kangaroo gave SunWater’s ‘Blue’ a fair run in the popularity contest with children who also enjoyed face-painting, magic displays, balloon masterpieces and the jumping castle and slide.

The Tablelands Regional Council were on hand to explain to people the best way to prepare for whatever the Aussie summer could throw at them – be it flood, fire or cyclone.

Maritime Safety Queensland and National Parks were also on hand to share important information with the community.

SunWater and Tablelands Regional Council express their gratitude to everyone that participated and attended the all-hazards information day supporting the State Government’s ‘Get Ready Queensland’ campaign to help families prepare for extreme weather this summer.
