Environmental Impact Statement
Since 2007, SunWater has undertaken extensive environmental assessment for the Connors River Dam and Pipelines EIS. The EIS provides information on:
- The existing social, economic, built and natural environment;
- A detailed description of the proposed project and objectives;
- Potential impact of the project on the social, economic, built and natural environment.
- The requirement for, and the scope of, environmental management plans (for construction and operation of the project) to mitigate potential adverse impacts; and
- Measures/plans proposed to mitigate potential adverse impacts.
The Coordinator-General reviewed a draft of the Connors River Dam and Pipelines EIS, allowing it to be released for public review and comment for the period 6 February to 22 March 2010.
Following the public release period (6 February to 22 March 2010), the Coordinator-General reviewed the EIS in detail and considered all properly made submissions received.
Fifteen (15) submissions against the EIS were received by the Coordinator-General. Any issues that require further assessment have been prioritised by the Coordinator-General through the Supplementary EIS process.
On 14 March 2011 the Coordinator-General released the EIS Supplementary Report for comment between the period of 14 March to 11 April 2011. This Supplementary Report addresses issues that were raised during the consultation period and provides additional information that has been requested by the Coordinator-General. Any changes to the project that have occurred since the release of the EIS are also covered in the Supplementary Report.
On 21 January 2012 Queensland Coordinator-General Keith Davies granted conditional environmental approval of the EIS. The project can now proceed with condition that include the restoration and protection of more than 16,000 hectares of vegetation and a conservation plan to ensure the survival and natural development of freshwater turtles.
SunWater will now see further government approval as specified in the EIS.
