Burdekin Falls Dam is a key element of the Burdekin Haughton Water Supply Scheme (BHWSS) — a large, complex system of channels and pipelines delivering water to a wide region of irrigation, industrial and urban customers.
Utilising a $1.915 million grant from the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund, SunWater is undertaking a feasibility study to address key issues facing the BHWSS, while also considering the long-term environmental and economic sustainability of the region.
As owner and manager of the BHWSS scheme, SunWater is focussed on ensuring it has the capacity to continue servicing customer requirements into the future.
A range of potential options to improve supply outcomes are being assessed. These include an upgrade of the Haughton main channel, additional pipelines and balancing storages, targeted channel lining to prevent seepage, and groundwater dewatering and re-use.
