Burdekin Falls Dam
With a storage capacity of 1.8 million megalitres — four times the capacity of Sydney Harbour — SunWater’s Burdekin Falls Dam is Queensland’s largest water storage reservoir.
Fed by a huge 114,200 km2 catchment (nearly twice the size of Tasmania), the dam reliably supports more than 400 irrigation, industrial and urban water customers in one of Queensland’s most diverse and important agricultural regions.
Burdekin Falls Dam offers enormous potential to the people of Far North Queensland.
Burdekin Haughton Water Supply Scheme
Burdekin Falls Dam operates in conjunction with storages at Clare Weir and Gorge Weir on the Burdekin River, and Val Bird and Giru weirs on the Haughton River at Giru. Together with a series of channels, pipelines and other key pieces of infrastructure, they form the Burdekin Haughton Water Supply Scheme.
Burdekin Falls Dam holds enough water to meet the needs of all existing customers, with 200,000 megalitres of unallocated water held in reserve to accommodate increases in demand.
Currently, all medium and high priority customers in the Burdekin Haughton Water Supply Scheme have full access to their water allocations.
Recognising that water supply demand from customers (both new and existing) can change; SunWater is involved in a number of exercises to forecast this demand and assess options to prepare for any future increases beyond current reserves.
Current Burdekin region projects
As owner and operator of Burdekin Falls Dam and the Burdekin Haughton Water Supply Scheme, SunWater is looking at the following opportunities to further harness the value of these assets for the benefit of the region:
- Increasing dam capacity — Burdekin Falls Dam Raising
- Supporting clean energy — Burdekin Falls Dam hydro-electricity
- Maintaining the highest levels of safety — Dam Safety Improvement Program
- Improving water scheme performance — Burdekin Haughton Water Supply Scheme Upgrade Feasibility Study
- Water security for Townsville and irrigators — Burdekin Haughton Main Channel Augmentation
In the delivery of these projects SunWater is actively engaging and working with customers, Government agencies and technical experts to support best-practice, efficient solutions aligned with the requirements of our customers and communities.
