Traveston Crossing Dam and Wyaralong Dam Investigations
Queensland Water Infrastructure (QWI) was established by the Queensland Government in June 2006 to progress feasibility studies, design and construction of new water infrastructure projects in south-east Queensland including the Traveston Crossing Dam and Wyaralong Dam. SunWater was engaged by QWI to investigate these sites to preliminary design level. The work was carried out in order to provide information for the environmental impact studies, and potential alliance partners for the delivery of the projects. The work undertaken included extensive geotechnical investigations, hydraulic modelling, hydrologic modelling and design activities. A brief outline of each of these projects is below.
Wyaralong Dam
The proposed Wyaralong Dam will provide a reservoir with storage capacity of 103,000 ML and an annual yield of 21,000 ML (when operated with Cedar Grove Weir) as an additional source of water for South East Queensland. Preliminary designs have been prepared for three types of dam which are all considered technically feasible for the site. They are a roller compacted concrete dam, an earth and rockfill dam and a concrete faced rockfill dam.
The dam site is located on Teviot Brook approximately 15 km from Beaudesert. The Wyaralong Dam has an estimated project cost of $333 million.
