Coal Seam Gas Water
Significant growth has occurred in coal seam gas (CSG) production in recent years in the Surat and Bowen Basins. This growth is expected to continue in the future.
CSG production requires the extraction of water from the coal seams. Accordingly, the growth in gas production has an associated growth in water extraction.
Traditional disposal means for this water has been discharge to evaporation ponds. However, the CSG industry has recognised that evaporation of this water is not the best use of the resource. Several CSG producers have constructed or are investigating the construction of water treatment plants for the treatment of this water. After treatment, this water may be suitable for use as town water supply, industrial facilities and high-value horticultural developments.
As part of our commitment to delivering innovative water solutions, SunWater is currently working with a number of CSG producers to identify viable markets for the produced water. Potential markets could include irrigation, feedlots, coal washing, power station cooling and urban consumption.
