Current Projects

  • Nathan Dam and Pipelines Project — SunWater is assessing the feasibility of a new dam on the Dawson River near Taroom. The dam will primarily meet the long-term water demands of coal mines and power stations in the Surat and Southern Bowen Basin coal basins. Water may also be made available to existing and new customers in the Dawson Valley Water Supply Scheme, and some may be held in reserve to meet critical urban supply needs of the region.
  • Spillway Capacity Upgrade Program — To ensure the highest level of safety of all our dams is maintained, SunWater is implementing a dam spillway capacity upgrade program.  This program will ensure SunWater’s dams continue to be able to hold excess volumes of water, and then be able to safely release this excess water over the spillway during periods of extreme rainfall.
  • Water For Bowen — The project aims to supply water for industrial and agricultural users via a new channel and pipeline system extending from the Burdekin River across the coastal plain to Bowen and surrounding areas.
  • Connors River Dam and Pipelines Project — This project aims to develop a new water storage in the Connors Isaac sub-catchment of central Queensland to increase the northern Bowen Basin region’s water supply reliability and security. Delivery of the stored water to areas of demand will require associated pipelines. SunWater is currently undertaking a detailed business case for the project, which includes the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) as part of the formal approvals process.
  • Water for Goondicum Mine — SunWater is constructing, and will own and operate a water supply project that will supply 1,500 ML/year of water to the Goondicum Industrial Minerals Project, which is a new mine being developed at Goondicum (near Monto) by Monto Minerals Ltd.
  • Coal Seam Gas Water — SunWater is currently working with a number of Coal Seam Gas producers to identify viable markets for Coal Seam Gas produced water. Potential markets could include irrigation, feedlots, coal washing, power station cooling and urban consumption.
  • Hinze Dam Stage 3 Raising — SunWater was appointed by the Gold Coast City Council to help select an alliance team, provide technical advice to the team and provide a peer review of the alliance design to deliver the raising of Hinze Dam to Stage 3. SunWater also conducted the physical hydraulic modelling of the modified spillway design.
  • Western Corridor Recycled Water Scheme - Eastern Pipeline — In October 2006 SunWater was novated into the Eastern Pipeline Alliance as a sub-alliance partner responsible for the design and documentation of the pipeline and pump stations associated with the Eastern Pipeline component of the overall scheme.
  • Traveston Crossing Dam and Wyaralong Dam Investigations — SunWater was engaged by Queensland Water Infrastructure (QWI) to investigate the Traveston Crossing Dam and Wyaralong Dam sites to preliminary design stage. The work was carried out in order to provide information for the environmental impact studies, and potential alliance partners for the delivery of the projects. The work undertaken included extensive geotechnical investigations, hydraulic modelling, hydrologic modelling and design activities.
