About the Bundaberg Water Supply Scheme

The Bundaberg Irrigation Area supplies irrigation water to 55,000 hectares of farmlands located in the Bundaberg region as well as assured supplies for the City of Bundaberg and communities within the Bundaberg Regional Council.

The use of the irrigation supplies ensures the Bundaberg area maintains its status as Queensland’s third largest sugar producing district, Australia’s largest producer of fresh market tomatoes and a significant contributor to Queensland’s overall production of fruit and vegetables supplying markets throughout Australia and overseas.

The Scheme is unique to Queensland in that it is the only large-scale irrigation area that was designed to serve existing farming enterprises.  Over 600 kilometres of channels and pipelines traverse the landscape distributing supplies to over 1,000 properties connected to the surface water scheme.

Showpiece of the Scheme is the 300,000 ML Paradise Dam which makes available almost 145,000 ML of water allocations for sale.  This ability to offer new water allocations for sale is attracting interest from around the country because of the potential for new irrigation, horticulture and industrial projects such as peanuts, irrigated rice, timber and agricultural biotechnology.
