Dam Facts
Construction
- 400,000m3 of roller compacted concrete was used
- 40,000m3 of conventional concrete was used
- 1 million tonnes of rock from the excavation was crushed to a very tight specification for use as concrete aggregate in the dam wall
- At the peak in early 2005, 450 people worked on the Dam's construction, with work continuing day and night
- The Creter Crane used to construct the Dam was an Australian first - never before had a crane of this size and type been used in Australia
- On 10 March 2005, the workforce achieved an Australasian record in the placement of Roller-compacted concrete
- The Dam reached 'practical completion' stage in November 2005.
Community benefits
- 40 percent of the Dam's workforce came from the Wide Bay Burnett region
- Over 120,000 hours were spent training and upskilling the Alliance team members
- A Burnett Water Local Participation Policy was put in place to ensure that competitive local suppliers and service providers were given a full, fair and reasonable opportunity to participate in projects such as the Paradise Dam
- Over 200 suppliers from the Wide Bay-Burnett region were involved in supplying goods and services
- Water from the Dam provides much needed support to the regions' industrial and agricultural community
- Almost 90 per cent of the total expenditure on Burnett Water's projects has been spent in Queensland
- It is anticipated that up to 50,000 people a year could eventually visit the Dam to use the newly created recreational facilities.
