Burnett Water Pty Ltd (BWPL) became a subsidiary company of SunWater on 16 December 2005 after SunWater bought shares in the company from the Queensland State Government.
BWPL was set up by the state government in 2001 to progress much needed water infrastructure in the Wide Bay-Burnett region. The water infrastructure construction projects managed by Burnett Water were Paradise Dam and Kirar Weir.
The construction of the Kirar Weir (formerly Eidsvold Weir) was officially completed in July 2005. Construction took approximately 15 months. The weir delivers water to the Upper Burnett region.
Practical completion of the Paradise Dam was also achieved on schedule at the end of November 2005 and the dam is delivering water to the Lower Burnett and Bundaberg region.
The benefits of these projects have been very positive for the community at large. Over 500 people worked on the projects and hundreds of regional businesses were involved in the supply of goods and services. Looking into the future, the social and economic benefits are set to continue.
On 7 December 2005, Burnett River Dam was officially named Paradise Dam by the then Queensland Premier, Hon Peter Beattie.
