SunWater gets on the front foot of weeds

28 Jul 2015

SunWater is taking a proactive stance on challenging aquatic weeds in Burdekin Channel System, with weed control scheduled in the Haughton Main Channel for next week.

The treatment of the Haughton Channel between the Tom Fenwick Pumpstation and the Haughton Balancing Storage is being conducted approximately four weeks earlier than in previous years as the extended dry conditions have promoted weed growth leading into the peak irrigation season.

Travis Richards who recently was appointed Service Manager for the Burdekin Channel distribution scheme said aquatic weeds are a well-known issue for irrigators and we are pleased to be working with our customers to get a head start on reducing the amount of weeds in our system prior to the peak irrigation periods over the summer.

“SunWater carries out weed control as part of our scheduled channel maintenance program, however this year we have responded to our customers needs by delivering an additional injection in the Haughton main channel.

“The reduced announced allocations this year will be a challenge for our customers but we are committed to working with them to minimise disruption to irrigation channel deliveries through the upcoming peak period.”

“The availability of water from this section of the Haughton Channel will be restricted for a short period as chemical is applied in the channel to target underwater weeds”, said Mr Richards.

The treated water is not suitable for use from 7am on Monday, 3 August 2015 until 7am on Monday, 10 August 2015.
