SunWater completes Stage One remedial works at Paradise Dam

11 Jun 2013

SunWater has announced the successful completion of Stage One of its remedial works at Paradise Dam and the impending commencement of Stage Two, following severe flooding caused by ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald over the 2013 Australia Day weekend.

Following the flood event, SunWater identified significant damage to the spillway energy dissipator and the rock downstream of the dam, and immediately developed a repair sequence and schedule to progressively manage the dam safety risks.

SunWater Chief Executive Officer, Peter Boettcher, said the first stage of the repair effort, which involved emergency repairs to enable the dissipator to withstand a late season flood event, has been completed according to plan and on schedule.

"The aim of this phase was to treat any scour risks on the dissipator and the rock foundation up to 20 metres down stream of the dissipator," he said.

"This distance has been assessed as sufficient to deal with the most significant features in the Goodnight beds rock formation to provide assurance that the dam will withstand another flood event."

SunWater will now commence Stage Two of the interim repairs to reinstate the dissipator sill wall and mitigate any immediate dam safety issues, with completion expected in late 2013.

Mr Boettcher said as a precautionary measure, SunWater will continue to undertake intermittent releases to ensure the level of the dam remains 3 metres below full supply level.

"The safety of our staff, our customers and the local community remains our key priority," he said.

"We continue to remain in close contact with our customers and residents living downstream of the dam and are also regularly communicating with the council, police, emergency services, the local disaster management group and the dam safety regulator about our activities."

Once Stage Two is complete, the third and final stage will involve a comprehensive dam safety review and investigations into whether additional works are required to ensure the dam fully satisfies dam safety regulations.
