SunWater has provided a boost to literacy resources for students at Mitchell State School, as part of The Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation’s (ALNF) Share-A-Book initiative.

Mitchell State School Head of Curriculum, Jane Filan thanked SunWater for the Share-A-Book library and said the school has created a program where students can borrow books to share with their parents and family members.

"Students and teachers will use the library in classrooms for ‘Reading for Enjoyment’ throughout the school day," Ms Filan said.

"The students all love the wide selection of books and we have also been able to allocate a number of books to each classroom."

ALNF Co-Founder and Executive Director, Kim Kelly said SunWater’s contribution to the Share-A-Book program will help the ALNF extend their reach to provide new and quality pre-loved books to Indigenous, refugee and marginalised communities in need of resources.

"We are very proud to be aligned with an organisation like SunWater, who share our vision and values in empowering communities to write their own futures," Ms Kelley said.

"One of the many challenges faced by ALNF is the lack of basic literacy resources available to students in marginalised communities.

"This presents a significant barrier in assisting the development of the necessary literacy skills required to actively participate in schooling, community and the workplace environment.

"The Share-A-Book program is an imperative part of the work we do, as it is impossible to teach someone to read and write without print material.

"Due to the generosity of SunWater in supporting our Share-A-Book program, many students and community members have received vital literacy resources."

SunWater Chief Executive, Peter Boettcher said SunWater is a proud supporter of the Share-A-Book program, which focuses on youth education in remote communities across Australia.

Since partnering with the ALNF in 2012, SunWater has donated three Share-A-Book libraries to schools in regional Queensland.
