SunWater dams at full supply

31 Jan 2012

Ten of SunWater’s dams are now full or overflowing due to the recent heavy rainfall across Queensland.

SunWater Infrastructure Management General Manager, Barry Jeppesen, confirmed that Burdekin Falls Dam (Charters Towers), Julius Dam (Mt Isa), Fairbairn Dam (Emerald), Teemburra Dam (Mackay), Cania Dam (Monto), Boondooma Dam, Bjelke-Petersen Dam, Fred Haigh Dam, Paradise Dam (Bundaberg/Burnett) and Beardmore Dam (St George) have reached 100 per cent capacity.

Mr Jeppesen said SunWater staff are working around the clock to monitor these dams to ensure that any excess water is being safely managed through dam spillways or via controlled water releases through dam gates.

"SunWater staff are currently onsite at all of these storages monitoring the inflows into the dam catchments," Mr Jeppesen said.

"Pleasingly, all of our dams are performing extremely well given the high volume of rainfall currently being experienced."

Mr Jeppesen said that SunWater has been in constant contact with relevant local authorities and disaster management groups and will continue to provide them with the latest information as required.
