Fairbairn Dam opening hours extended for summer

20 Dec 2012

SunWater has committed to trialling extended operating hours at the Fairbairn Dam recreation area over the summer months, following the second meeting of the SunWater Fairbairn Dam Recreation Area Community Consultative Group in Emerald yesterday.

The Fairbairn Dam recreation area will now be open from 5am to 7pm, extended from 6:30am to 7pm, to allow locals and holiday makers to maximise their recreation time during the warmer months.

SunWater Area Operations Manager, Tom Wallwork, said that SunWater committed to trialling the extended opening hours after feedback received at the Fairbairn Dam Community Consultative Group (CCG) meeting.

"SunWater established the CCG to listen to any concerns the Emerald community has regarding the Fairbairn Dam Recreation Area, and the issue of opening hours was a key concern among members," Mr Wallwork said.

"We understand that people want the opportunity to spend more time at the recreation area to engage in leisure activities and water sports over the summer months; but we also ask the community to act responsibly at the recreation area so that people can continue to use it safely."

Mr Wallwork said that it is important for those using the dam and recreation areas to make sure they read the safety signs and remain within specified swimming, boating and waterskiing zones.

The extension to opening hours at Fairbairn Dam will be effective from Friday, December 21.

The next SunWater Community Consultative Group meeting will be held in mid-2013.
