Fairbairn Dam Bridge to remain closed

09 Aug 2012

SunWater today announced that the Fairbairn Dam Spillway Bridge will remain closed until further notice while a comprehensive traffic management plan is assessed.

SunWater Area Operations Manager, Tom Wallwork, said that SunWater became concerned for the safety of road users crossing the Fairbairn Dam Bridge, following the repeated recent sightings of a number of heavy vehicles crossing the bridge that exceeded its design load limit.

"SunWater engaged independent consultants to undertake an in-depth assessment of the site and they advised that the Fairbairn Dam Spillway Bridge has been damaged over time by oversize vehicles irresponsibly using the bridge despite clear signage," Mr Wallwork said.

"Following this advice, we have been undertaking further assessments and we need to ensure these are thoroughly completed before we can determine the conditions under which the bridge can be safely re-opened to the general public."

Mr Wallwork confirmed that SunWater is currently assessing a comprehensive traffic management plan for the bridge to ensure the continued safety of drivers.

"We apologise for any inconvenience the closure of the bridge may cause, but it is absolutely essential for us to enforce these measures to ensure public safety," Mr Wallwork said.

"A date for the re-opening of the bridge will be determined once all the necessary assessments have been satisfactorily carried out."
