Connors River Dam Preferred Contractor Announced

30 Nov 2011

SunWater has reached another milestone in the development of the Connors River Dam and Pipeline Project with the selection of Thiess Barnard Joint Venture as a preferred construction tenderer for the dam.

Construction of the 376,000ML Connors River Dam is part of SunWater’s $1.2 billion Connors River Dam and Pipeline Project.

The project has been identified as a solution to meet future water demands for Central Queensland’s resources sector and provide long-term benefits for the region’s economy.

Completion of the dam and pipeline in late-2014 will also provide a reliable water supply for the Bowen Basin townships of Moranbah and Nebo.

SunWater Chief Executive Peter Boettcher said preferred tenderer selection for the dam meant the project remained on schedule with construction to commence in the first half of 2012.

"We had already selected John Holland for the construction of the pipeline from Connors River Dam to Moranbah and now with the selection of the Thiess Barnard Joint Venture for the dam, this project is on track to start next year, approvals permitting," he said.

Mr Boettcher said the final investment decision would be made by SunWater’s Board in March next year with contracts expected to be awarded soon after.

As preferred tenderer for the dam, Thiess Barnard Joint Venture will now work alongside SunWater to finalise project design and approvals.

SunWater General Manager Mark Browne said SunWater selected Thiess Barnard Joint Venture as the preferred tenderer through an Early Tenderer Involvement (ETI) process.

"Following Request for Tender we engaged two competing firms and used their industry experience to provide constructability input into the dam design and to generate market tested construction cost estimates," he said.

SunWater is looking forward to delivering this project and working with the Thiess Barnard team.
