SunWater makes headway on $1.48m scheme safety upgrade

04 Oct 2010

SunWater is making solid progress on its $1.48million safety upgrade of the Nogoa Mackenzie Water Supply Scheme with more than 80% of the work now successfully completed.

SunWater Area Operations Manager Tom Wallwork said the State-wide initiative, which commenced in Emerald last year, was designed to make the water supply scheme safer for SunWater staff and the general public.

Mr Wallwork said safety upgrades had been carried out on channel gate structures, trash screens, walkways and handrails right across the Nogoa Mackenzie Water Supply Scheme and he expected the entire upgrade to be completed by February 2011.

Mr Wallwork said industry standards in safety had changed significantly from when Emerald’s water supply scheme was first established in 1968 and SunWater was committed to ensuring its water infrastructure network was in line with those new safety standards.

“SunWater scheduled the safety upgrade work to occur during low or off peak times to limit water supply interruptions. Completion of the upgrades has been very successful and I thank farmers for their patience during this time,” Mr Wallwork said.
