SunWater dams safely passing flood water

19 Dec 2010

Unprecedented and continued rain across Queensland has resulted in the filling and overflowing of almost all SunWater’s bulk water storages across the State.

SunWater General Manager Infrastructure Management Barry Jeppesen said that SunWater staff have been working round the clock monitoring and operating SunWater’s Dams in Flood Operations Mode.

“During a flood event a range of different organisations play their part in the management, monitoring, reporting or minimisation of flood impacts.”

“SunWater’s responsibility during flood events is to manage and operate its dams and weirs in accordance with established operational guidelines.”

“SunWater’s Dams have been designed to safety pass flood water through their purpose built spillways,” Mr Jeppesen said.

“SunWater also has gated dams and with these dams, during a flood event, the gates are open and a controlled release of water is passed through the gates.”

“Our staff are on site at all our dams regularly monitoring and undertaking operational activities as required during these extreme weather events.”

“All of our dams are designed to safely pass water over the spillway when the dam’s water storage is above full capacity and there are no concerns associated with the safety of any of our dams. They are operating as they should and are safely passing the floodwaters,” Mr Jeppesen said.

SunWater will continue to monitor inflows into its dams’ catchments and based on that data will operate its dams in line with established dam operating guidelines.

SunWater is in constant contact with all relevant local authorities to advise them of the water release and the course of action being taken and will continue to liaise with them and other stakeholders as required.
