Advice No.1
Date and Time: 11/08/10
Water Storage: Teemburra, Eungella and Kinchant dams
Location: Mackay
Dam Level: Teemburra (100%), Eungella (100%), Kinchant (100%)

Event/Issue: Water Release/Spillway Overflow

As owner and operator of the Teemburra, Eungella and Kinchant dams, SunWater is advising of spillway overflows and water releases.

Heavy rainfall across the region has resulted in significant inflows into the region’s major water storages.

Teemburra Dam

SunWater is advising that significant inflows into the Teemburra Dam catchment resulted in the dam overflowing at 10pm on 10 August.

Water is currently 76mm above the spillway crest and discharging at a rate of 120ML per day.

As rain in the region has now decreased it is expected the spillway overflow will also decrease over the next seven days.

SunWater will continue to monitor the overflow event and take all necessary action under the dam’s normal operating guidelines.

SunWater has advised relevant authorities of any impact to road access as a result of the overflow event.

Eungella Dam

SunWater is advising that significant inflows into the Eungella Dam catchment resulted in the dam overflowing at 5am on 11 August.

Water is currently 70mm above the spillway crest and discharging at a rate of approximately 295ML per day.

Kinchant Dam

As part of SunWater’s established dam operating procedures, a water release commenced at the dam’s downstream outlet works at 10:30am today and will continue for a period of 3.5 days due to significant catchment inflows.

SunWater will release approximately 400ML during this time.

SunWater will continue to monitor inflows into the dam catchment and based on that data will increase or decrease water releases as required in line with established dam operating guidelines.

SunWater has contacted all relevant local authorities to advise them of the water releases and spillway overflow events and the course of action being taken and will continue to liaise with them as required.

SunWater will provide further updates on the water release and spillway overflow events once more information is gathered and assessed.
