Event/Issue: Water Release/Spillway Overflow

As owner and operator of the Paradise and Fred Haigh dams, and Isis Balancing Storage, SunWater is advising of spillway overflows and possible overflows.

Heavy rainfall across the region has resulted in significant inflows into the region’s major water storages.

Paradise Dam

SunWater is advising that significant inflows into the Paradise Dam catchment resulted in the dam overflowing at 2:30am on 12 December 2010.

Water is currently 405mm above the spillway crest and discharging at a rate of 14250ML per day.

As rain in the region has now decreased it is expected the spillway overflow will also decrease over the next seven days provided no further inflows occur.

SunWater will continue to monitor the overflow event and take all necessary action under the dam’s normal operating guidelines.

SunWater has advised relevant authorities of any impact to road access as a result of the overflow event.

Fred Haigh Dam

SunWater is advising that significant inflows into the Fred Haigh Dam catchment resulted in an increase to the dam’s storage capacity to just below the spillway crest.

Water is currently 300mm below the spillway crest.

SunWater will continue to monitor the dam’s storage level and take all necessary action under the dam’s normal operating guidelines.

Isis Balancing Storage

SunWater is advising that significant inflows into the Isis Balancing Storage catchment resulted in the dam overflowing at 3:00am on 12 December 2010.

Water is currently 20mm above the spillway crest and discharging at a rate of approximately 100ML per day.

Inflow monitoring data indicates the spill will cease within the next 6 hours.

SunWater will continue to monitor the overflow event and take all necessary action under the dam’s normal operating guidelines.

SunWater has advised relevant authorities of any impact to road access as a result of the overflow event.
