Historic milestone for Paradise Dam

26 Feb 2010

Paradise Dam is full thanks to major rainfall across the Burnett region over the past fortnight.

SunWater Area Operations Manager Nev Wogandt said water was now lapping at the dam’s spillway crest for the first time since the dam was constructed in 2005.

Mr Wogandt said the recent rainfall had generated approximately 128,000 megalitres of inflow into the dam.

Mr Wogandt said the dam was not expected to spill at the current inflow rate unless the region received further significant rainfall.

“Reaching 100% capacity is an historic milestone for the dam and water allocation holders within the Bundaberg Water Supply Scheme, will benefit from increased water security.

“Our customers have been advised that their announced allocations are now set at 100%.

“During this event SunWater will manage any further minor inflows through controlled releases via the dam’s outlet works and environmental gate.

“These controlled water releases will enable us to minimise environmental impacts downstream of the dam and also allow us to operate our mini hydro power station, which generates clean, green energy into the State’s power grid,” he said.
