Bundaberg region brimming with water

20 Dec 2010

Fifteen of the 17 storages in the Bundaberg region are overflowing, including that of Bjelke-Petersen Dam which was at a critically low level of 5% in March this year.

Bjelke-Petersen Dam started spilling yesterday, Sunday 19th December and is currently discharging approximately 5000ML/day. This is the first overflow event for Bjelke-Petersen Dam since 4th February 2001.

Bundaberg Service Manager Milton Pukallus said that Bjelke-Petersen Dam’s critically low levels earlier this year were a cause for concern for all dam stakeholders and the lowest the dam ever reached was 2% (2400ML) in November 2007.

“We’ve seen an incredible increase in the storage volume over the past nine months. It’s a vast contrast from the critical levels we witnessed in March this year when the dam was as low as 5.3%,” Mr Pukallus said.

Mr Pukallus said that the rainfall over the last two weeks have helped the Bundaberg storages significantly by bringing almost all of them to full capacity.

“The storage performance of our two major dams alone is evidence of what a wet year 2010 has been,” Mr Pukallus said.

“Fred Haigh Dam commenced overflowing last week which was the first spill in 18 years. Paradise Dam is also overflowing for the second time in 2 weeks, and for the third time this year after its first ever spill since its construction in 2005.

“With almost all of our storages full and overflowing, we are certainly in a good position in terms of being able to offer water security for our agricultural, urban and commercial water customers,” he said.

Mr Pukallus urges the public to please obey the safety signs and instruction from SunWater personnel and take care whilst visiting any dams, especially if they are overflowing.

SunWater will continue to monitor the overflow events and take all necessary action, including liaising with stakeholder and relevant authorities in line with the storages’ operating guidelines.
