Bowen and Galilee miners quick to snap up water security

10 Aug 2010

SunWater Infrastructure Development General Manager Mark Browne confirmed the State’s leading bulk water supplier had gained the necessary support to enable the Connors River Dam and Pipeline and Galilee Basin Pipeline projects to proceed to the pre-construction investigation stage.

The proposed 373,662 megalitre dam and 368km of pipelines will provide up to 49,500 megalitres of additional water security for the booming Bowen basin and the crucial water supply needed to enable development of the Galilee basin.

Mr Browne said Foundation Customer commitment to the water infrastructure projects had been swift.

“Water is a key element to industrial production so it comes as no surprise that miners in the Bowen and Galilee basin were keen to shore up water security for their operations,” Mr Browne said.

“We are certainly very pleased with the level of Foundation Customer commitment from the mining sector, which exceeded the 75% reservation of water allocations required to move to the pre-construction phase.

“This strong Foundation Customer support for the project will enable us to undertake necessary pre-construction activities, including detailed engineering design, construction procurement, and finalise our business cases before moving to a final investment decision in the first half of the 2011 calendar year,” he said.

Mr Browne said the progression of these key water infrastructure projects to the pre-construction phase was good news for the mining sector and associated townships, and also heralded potential economic prosperity for other industries in the region associated with mining.

Completion of the dam and pipelines was scheduled for early 2014 subject to a final investment decision in the first half of calendar 2011. SunWater will continue to market the dam’s remaining water allocations.
