Tinaroo Falls Dam safety upgrade hits the halfway mark

21 Dec 2009

SunWater construction crews poured their 400th truckload of concrete today, marking the halfway point in a $21million safety upgrade at Tinaroo Falls Dam.

The final truckload was poured into a 250 metre long protection slab being placed at the foot of the dam, which will ensure it can safely manage extreme rainfall events.

SunWater Area Operations Manager Col Bendall said the final truckload marked the end of construction at the dam over the Christmas break, before crews returned in mid January to start installing post tension anchors through the centre of the dam wall.

Mr Bendall said the dam was still completely safe and the upgrade was just part of a State-wide upgrade to ensure dam spillways took advantage of advanced construction technology that resulted in more effective spillway management.

“We are very pleased with the progress we have made to date and that we have finalised this important element of the project before the traditional wet season begins early next year,” Mr Bendall said.

“When we return in January we will begin the task of inserting a total of 32, 10 inch wide steel cables up to 80 metres through the dam wall and into the foundation rock below.

“The cables will be stress tested to 2,000 tonnes to ensure that in the unlikely event of extreme rainfall, the dam will not suffer from any undermining, erosion or lifting and will be able to pass flows safely through its spillway as designed.

“To insert the cables we will need to construct a temporary steel bridge across the spillway so our 20 tonne drilling rig can move across the entire length of the 530 metre dam and allow our crew to drill down into the spillway section as well.

“We have called in one of the largest cranes available in Far North Queensland, around 250 tonnes, to enable us to construct the spillway bridge so we can continue with the rest of the project.

“The spillway bridge will be installed after the traditional wet season,” he said.

Mr Bendall said the dam would still be off limits to the public while construction continues through to late 2010, but the lookout viewing area would still enable people to gain an insight into the dam safety upgrade.
