Biloela’s young musicians have chance to tune up beside Queensland’s finest

31 Aug 2009

Biloela’s budding musicians have an opportunity train with some of the Australia’s leading musical talent thanks to a youth music workshop being sponsored by SunWater.

Next weekend, Southern Cross Soloists, an internationally renowned Brisbane-based musical ensemble, will visit Biloela to host a three day workshop where they will offer one-on-one mentoring to our up and coming young musicians.

SunWater Regional Manager Nev Wogandt said the visit by Southern Cross Soloists to the Biloela High School was supported as part of SunWater’s ongoing commitment to youth education and the arts throughout regional Queensland.

Mr Wogandt said this was the fourth year SunWater had been involved with the travelling regional music program and he was pleased it had finally made its way to Biloela and that local musicians were set to benefit.

“Having lived in regional towns for most of my life, I understand that there are times that we miss out on some of the same opportunities available to our city cousins – sometimes the distances and associated costs are simply too great,” Mr Wogandt said.

“By sponsoring this workshop our high school budding music students will be able to play alongside some our State’s finest talent and no doubt come away from the experience with improved skills and new confidence in their abilities,” he said.

Mr Wogandt said the three day workshop was open to all Central Queensland musicians aged between 10 and 25 and commences on Friday, September 11. He said the value of the workshop to local musicians has also been recognised through the support of the Banana Shire Council’s Regional Arts Development Fund.

The tutors provided by Southern Cross Soloists include professional musicians in woodwind, brass, percussion and stringed instruments as well as piano.

A series of intensive master classes, rehearsals and tutorials will culminate in all participants performing in a free community concert at the Biloela School of Arts Hall on Sunday, September 13 at 1:30pm.
